One outcome of the electrostatic attraction scenario between additive(s) and working surfaces is an increase in the traction coefficient, Ct. The coefficient of traction is given by the following formula:

A benefit from the electrostatic repulsive condition depicted in Scheme 1 is decreased wear. By judiciously selecting the correct functionality and molar ratios, one can achieve the best of both worlds, i.e., increased Ct and decreased μ without the use of corrosive chemistry.
